Hermes Alternative

Hermes Agent vs AutoGPT: which open-source option fits your work?

AutoGPT and Hermes Agent get called AI agents and they answer to different owners. AutoGPT builds and runs agents for you, with a visual builder and a paid hosted service. Hermes Agent is one self-hosted personal agent that improves itself. Kortix, the open-source AI Operating System, runs the agents from one git repo you own.

What AutoGPT is now

AutoGPT today is a platform that builds and runs AI agents for you. Describe an outcome in plain English or shape every step in a visual builder, then run the agent on demand, on a schedule, or from a trigger (agpt.co). Its own repository puts the hosted Platform first and calls self-hosting the free path, where you supply the infrastructure and the model keys (github.com/Significant-Gravitas/AutoGPT, checked October 2026). The repository reports 185,000+ GitHub stars and a team of Experts led by a head-of-AI agent called Otto.

The hosted Platform is a paid service with usage-based agent runs. The self-hosted path runs the same repository and asks you to operate it, with your own infrastructure and model keys.

What Hermes Agent is, from its own page

Hermes Agent is the self-hosted personal AI agent built by Nous Research. Its own project page describes an agent that remembers your projects, writes its own skills, and reaches you through one gateway that connects Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal and the CLI (hermes-agent.nousresearch.com, checked October 2026). It runs on a five-dollar VPS, a GPU cluster or serverless infrastructure, and it is built around one operator.

The two tools answer different questions. AutoGPT asks what you want done and builds the agent for it. Hermes Agent asks who you are and remembers across sessions. Neither keeps a team's agents as files in a repository the team owns.

Where Kortix fits

Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System. Your agents, skills, company memory and connectors live in one git repo you own, and each session runs on its own cloud computer. An agent is agents/<name>.md (behavior) plus an agents.<name> block in kortix.yaml (governance), and triggers start a session on a cron schedule or a signed webhook when nobody is asking.

Kortix builds and runs the agents the way AutoGPT does, and it keeps what they are, what they may reach and what they have learned as files a team diffs. Session work reaches main through a change request, and per-resource permissions, roles, groups and an audit trail sit around it. Run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network. Self-host is free.

How to choose

Pick AutoGPT when you want an agent built for you and a hosted service to run it, and you are happy for the platform to hold the work. Pick Hermes Agent when one person wants a private agent that learns on a machine they control. Pick Kortix when a team wants to own the agents and the system that runs them together: every agent, skill, memory file and connector is a file, each session is isolated, and a person reviews what lands.

AutoGPT and Hermes Agent questions

What a buyer asks before choosing between them.

Is AutoGPT still the 2023 experiment?
No. AutoGPT is now a platform: a hosted service with a plain-English AutoPilot, a visual builder and a team of AI Experts led by Otto. Its own site lists 45+ connected platforms and hundreds of models, and self-hosting stays the free path.
Is Hermes Agent the same kind of tool as AutoGPT?
No. Hermes Agent is one self-hosted personal agent that keeps persistent memory and writes its own skills. AutoGPT builds and runs agents for you, hosted or self-hosted. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System when a team wants the agents in one repo it owns.
Can I self-host either one?
Yes. Hermes Agent installs on hardware you control, and AutoGPT's self-hosted path is the free one, with your own infrastructure and model keys. Kortix runs on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on-prem, and self-host is free.
Which one should a team pick?
A team that wants agents built and hosted for it can start with AutoGPT. A team that wants to own the agents, the skills and the memory as files in its own git repo should start with Kortix. One person who wants a private agent on their own machine fits Hermes Agent.

Run the agents and the system from one repo.
