# Hermes Agent vs OpenHands: a coding harness, a personal agent, or the open-source platform Kortix

> OpenHands is a self-hosted harness for coding agents; Hermes Agent is a personal agent on a server you control; Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System a whole company runs. What separates them is the job each is built around.

## Kortix, Hermes Agent and OpenHands on the same rows

Kortix is the open-source platform we recommend; each rival cell comes from that project's own repository and docs.

| | Kortix (recommended) | Hermes Agent | OpenHands |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Open source | Open source. Read it, fork it, audit it. | Yes; self-hosted, with your own model. | Yes; Agent Canvas and the OpenHands agent are open source. |
| What it is | The open-source AI Operating System. | A personal agent that learns as it works. | A self-hosted control center for coding agents. |
| Who it is for | Teams and companies running many jobs. | One person, on a server they control. | An engineering team's coding work. |
| Where it runs | Kortix Cloud, your VPC, or on-prem. | A $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless. | Your machine, Docker, or your own infrastructure. |
| Model choice | Any model provider with your own keys. | Any model; switch with one command. | Bring your own model, any LLM. |
| The job it automates | Agents for every team's work. | One operator's day-to-day tasks. | Coding conversations and scheduled automations. |
| Who reviews the work | A person approves what lands. | You run it and approve each command. | You review the agent's edits. |
| How it reaches your tools | Slack and Microsoft Teams are live. | Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, CLI. | Slack, GitHub, Linear, and Notion. |

OpenHands and Hermes Agent rows come from each project's own repository and docs, checked October 2026; the Kortix row comes from the Kortix docs and repository.

## A job that starts with no one asking

`kortix.yaml`

```yaml
triggers:
  - slug: weekly-report
    type: cron
    agent: kortix
    cron: "0 0 15 * * 0"
    prompt: Build the weekly report.
```

A cron trigger starts a session on schedule, so work runs for the company without a person launching it.

## Three tools, three scopes

OpenHands is a self-hosted stack for coding agents. [Its own repository](https://github.com/OpenHands/OpenHands) calls Agent Canvas a developer control center that turns coding agents into an always-on engineering team, and it runs on your machine by default or on a backend behind Docker, a server or your own infrastructure. It starts the OpenHands agent and can also drive other coding agents, brings its own model, and wires automations into Slack, GitHub, Linear and Notion.

Hermes Agent is the open-source personal agent from [Nous Research](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/). It installs with one command, keeps persistent memory, writes its own skills, and reaches one operator across Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email or the terminal. It runs on a server that person controls.

Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System, built for a whole company. OpenHands points at an engineering team's coding tasks and Hermes points at one person's day; Kortix runs every team's jobs from one configuration a company owns.

## Where OpenHands fits

OpenHands fits when the work is code and the people are engineers. You self-host the client, choose the backend the agents run on, and bring the model you want. Its automations break a GitHub issue into tasks, publish a report to Slack, and run on a schedule or in response to a webhook. For an engineering team that mainly wants coding agents under its own control, that is the shape it needs.

## Where Hermes Agent fits

Hermes Agent fits one person who wants a private, always-on agent they can carry between chat apps. The learning loop is the point: it remembers your projects and turns a solved problem into a reusable skill. [What Is Hermes Agent](/what-is-hermes-agent) goes through the project, and [Is Hermes Agent free](/is-hermes-agent-free) covers what it costs to run.

## Where Kortix takes over

Kortix answers the question a coding harness and a personal agent both leave open: who runs the agents across the rest of the company. An agent is a markdown file plus an `agents.<name>` block in `kortix.yaml`, and connectors, triggers and the machine image live in the same manifest, so [a team's agents are files a person can read](/hermes-for-teams). One isolated sandbox per session. Each session has its own isolated machine and branch. Session work reaches `main` through a change request. Merge is default-deny for agents. Per-resource permissions for people and agents. Roles, groups, and an audit trail. SAML 2.0 single sign-on and SCIM 2.0.

Coding is one job among many. The same agents answer in Slack, run on a schedule, and reach 3,000+ apps in a click, plus MCP, OpenAPI, Postman, GraphQL and raw HTTP. If the team wants to run the stack itself, [the self-hosting guide](/self-hosting-hermes-alternative) covers one Docker Compose stack on a box you control.

## How to choose

Choose OpenHands when the work is code and an engineering team wants a self-hosted coding harness. Hermes Agent suits one person who wants a personal agent that learns on their own machine. Kortix is for the company that needs one place to run, govern and review agents across every team, with the configuration in a repo it owns.

## Hermes Agent vs OpenHands questions

What decides between a coding harness, a personal agent and a company platform.

### Is Kortix open source?

Yes. Kortix is open source: read it, fork it, audit it. The whole platform runs from one git repo you own.

### Does OpenHands run only the OpenHands agent?

No. Agent Canvas runs the OpenHands agent out of the box and can also drive third-party agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Pi and OpenCode.

### Where do OpenHands and Kortix run their agents?

OpenHands runs on your machine by default or on a backend you host, with OpenHands Cloud and Enterprise as managed options. Run Kortix on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network. Self-host is free.

### What does Kortix cost?

Free is $0 with 200 credits per month and 1 project. The team plan is $40 per seat per month with 2,500 credits per month per seat, pooled. Self-host is free.

## Run every team's agents from one repo you own.

Start with one job, then add the rest of the company.
