# Hermes Agent vs LangGraph: a framework, a personal agent, or the open-source platform Kortix

> LangGraph is a code-first library; Hermes Agent is a personal agent on your own server; Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System a team runs. The choice turns on three questions: who builds the agent, where it runs, and who reviews the work.

## Kortix, Hermes Agent and LangGraph on the same rows

Kortix is the open-source platform we recommend; each rival cell comes from that project's own site or repository.

| | Kortix (recommended) | Hermes Agent | LangGraph |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Open source | Open source. Read it, fork it, audit it. | Yes; self-hosted, with your own model. | Yes; the library installs from PyPI and npm. |
| What it is | The open-source AI Operating System. | A personal agent that learns as it works. | A low-level orchestration framework for stateful agents. |
| Who it is for | Teams and companies running many jobs. | One person, on a server they control. | Developers building agents into their own application. |
| Where it runs | Kortix Cloud, your VPC, or on-prem. | A $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless. | Inside your own application; you host it. |
| Model choice | Any model provider with your own keys. | Any model; switch with one command. | Whatever model you wire into the graph. |
| Where the config lives | Files in a git repo you own. | On the machine you run it on. | Code you write in your own repository. |
| Who reviews the work | A person approves what lands. | You run it and approve each command. | Review is whatever you build into the graph. |

Hermes Agent and LangGraph rows come from each project's own site and repository, checked October 2026; the Kortix row comes from the Kortix docs and repository.

## The platform is a repo and a change request

`project`

```
project (git repo + kortix.yaml)
└─ session ──> cloud computer: an isolated sandbox on a branch named after the session
└─ the OpenCode agent works
└─ change request ──> you review & merge ──> main
```

Source: https://github.com/kortix-ai/suna (README.md)

A session runs on its own sandbox and branch, and what it produces reaches main through a change request a person reads.

## The decision in one line

LangGraph is a low-level orchestration framework you import into your own Python or JavaScript application: you write the graph, the state and the nodes, and you host the result. Hermes Agent is a personal agent built by Nous Research that runs on a server you control and learns as it works. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System, where agents, skills, company memory and connectors live in one git repo a team owns and each session runs on its own cloud computer.

The question that decides between them is who writes the agent and who reviews what it does.

## What LangGraph is

LangGraph is a library you add to an application you already run. [Its repository](https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph) describes it as "a low-level orchestration framework for building stateful agents", with durable execution, human-in-the-loop interrupts, and short-term and long-term memory. It installs with `pip install -U langgraph`, and there is a JavaScript edition for the same model.

That shape fits a developer embedding agents into an existing application who wants control over the graph. The framework supplies the runtime pieces. Hosting, deployment, a review path and an audit trail stay with the team that builds it, and LangChain's own materials point people at LangSmith for debugging and deployment.

## What Hermes Agent is

Hermes Agent is the open-source personal agent from [Nous Research](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/). It installs with one command, keeps persistent memory across sessions, writes reusable skills as it solves problems, and reaches one operator through Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email or the terminal. It runs on a small VPS, a GPU cluster or serverless infrastructure, and you point it at any model.

Its whole design centers on one operator: the memory it builds belongs to that person's projects, and the automation it schedules runs for them. [What Is Hermes Agent](/what-is-hermes-agent) covers the project in more detail.

## What Kortix is

Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System. An agent is `agents/<name>.md` (behavior) plus an `agents.<name>` block in `kortix.yaml` (governance), so what an agent may reach is a file the team reviews. Connectors, triggers and the machine image are declared in the same manifest. One isolated sandbox per session. Each session has its own isolated machine and branch. Thousands of agents in parallel on one config, each on its own cloud computer. Session work reaches `main` through a change request. Merge is default-deny for agents, so a person decides what lands.

LangGraph gives a developer a framework to assemble; Hermes gives one person an agent to grow. Kortix runs the surface a team shares: per-resource permissions for people and agents. Roles, groups, and an audit trail. Work lands as a reviewed diff. [Kortix compared with Hermes](/kortix-vs-hermes) takes the platform and personal-agent comparison further.

## How to choose

Choose LangGraph when you are building agents into your own application and want to own the orchestration code. Hermes Agent suits one person who wants a private, always-on agent that learns on a machine they control. Kortix is for the case where more than one person has to run, govern and review the agents, and the configuration has to live where the whole team can read it.

If the field is wider than these three, [the Hermes alternatives page](/hermes-alternatives) covers the other open-source tools teams compare.

## Hermes Agent vs LangGraph questions

What decides between a framework, a personal agent and a platform.

### Is Kortix open source?

Yes. Kortix is open source: read it, fork it, audit it. The whole platform runs from one git repo you own.

### Is LangGraph open source?

The LangGraph libraries are public and install from PyPI and npm, and the framework can be used without LangChain. The debugging and deployment platform around it, LangSmith, is LangChain's commercial product.

### Can we self-host Kortix?

Yes. Run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network. Self-host is free.

### What does Kortix cost?

Free is $0 with 200 credits per month and 1 project. The team plan is $40 per seat per month with 2,500 credits per month per seat, pooled. Self-host is free.
